"Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others." Philippians 2:4
Our mission to help those in need reaches far into the community:
Our primary mission is the Elementary School, focusing on the food backpack program, school supplies, and whatever other needs the school communicates to us.
One of our most successful efforts to support our missions, is in-door yard sale. Items are donated by members of the church and the community, and patrons come in to browse the items, and give a donation for the items they want. The is held during the City of Hallowell’s event called “Old Hallowell Day”, which is held the 3rd Saturday of July every year.
Cox Memorial UMC is happy to host an Easter Sunday, Sunrise Service at The River Park in Hallowell, along the beautiful bank of the Kennebec River. This year we partnered with Green St. UMC from Augusta to offer the service to everyone who wanted to share in worship.
In 2023 we held our first annual Christmas Fair, in conjunction with other churches from our Cooperative Parish. Each participating church bring items made by their congregation to sell, with the proceeds going to their individual mission areas.
We host an annual Halloween Trunk or Treat for the families in the community, giving them a safe place to come in out of the cold. We offer everyone who visits a choice of candy, baked treats, warm and cold beverages, as well as activities for the young at heart.
Examples of the generosity and outreach of Cox Memorial UMC are the financial donations made to the Hallowell Food Panty, The New Mainer’s Project, the Upper Room at Green St. UMC, the Randolph UMC Clothes Closet, Bread of Life Ministries, Good Shepherd Food Bank, Salvation Army, and The Ronald McDonald House. In addition, we send baked treats to the local fire and police departments, town office and the schools.
Our church community understands the call from Christ to be a comfort to those in need. We strive to answer that call in anyway possible. By providing the comfort of Prayer Shawls in times of difficulty, offering bible studies which are open to anyone interested in attending, visiting nursing homes during the Christmas season, and opening our hearts, minds, and doors to anyone wishing to enter and share in the worship of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
